This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
I was privileged to witness this little song being shared by a mom and her two year old daughter. The little girl had found a battery operated tea light candle on the bookshelf in her home. She sat on my knee with her mother beside me. Turning on the candle she began to sing. Her mom joined in and I witness a fabulous expression of love: not only the love of mom to daughter and daughter to mom but also their love for Jesus.
Won't let Satan blow it out. I'm gonna let it shine.
Her little lips pursed together and with a huff of air she tried to blow out the candle. Of course, it did not go out.
Hide it under a bushel - NO! I'm gonna let it shine.
Her mom continued to sing with her little one saying the “No” with much enthusiasm and volume.
As they continued to sing I began to think. Think about light and darkness and how much we take the light for granted .Many of us have never experienced real darkness. With street lights, glowing electronics, cell phones, true darkness is rarely experienced. Until the power fails….
Light a candle when the power fails and watch how quickly the darkness fades. Sometimes the only time light is appreciated is when it is “under a bushel”. A candle in the darkness shines the brightest. Just like a power failure, sin darkens our world and blackens our lives. The shining light of Christ saves us from the darkness and we glow with His light never to be in darkness again.
Concordia Lutheran Seminary Guild endeavors to shine the light of Christ by helping our future pastors. Help us by shining your light.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-15
